The Westfield stone is a sandstone monolith which allegedly constitutes one of the Refuge Stones marking the boundaries of the sanctuary around Torphichen Preceptory, along with the small cross-slab at Witchcraig and the short monolith at Gormyre.

However, it seems likely that this was a function acsribed to the stone in the medieval period, and it is quite likely that the stone was originally a Neolithic standing-stone.

The stone had fallen in the nineteenth century, at which time it was said that traces of a Maltese Cross were discernable on its surface, although if that was the case, this carving is no longer visible.

In the mid-twentieth century, the stone had disappeared, but had been rediscovered by 1998, and restoration work was carried out by GUARD.
