The Castle

Duntarvie is a four-storey late sixteenth century house with five-storey towers on its North side, possibly built for a James Durham, who gained the lands in 1588, but later becoming part of the nearby larger estate of Hopetoun, to the North.

The South-west corner was added in the seventeenth century, and a garden was possibly built at around the same time. The castle was inhabited until the late nineteenth century.

The castle fell into a fairly ruinous condition until restoration work began in 1994, but by January the following year, work had to be suspended for a time due to the collapse of the East tower. Restoration work continues apace, however, under the auspices of Ed Kelly Architects.
