Introduction

To the immediate North of Traprain Law, just across the A1 road, and in the middle of a field, we find the striking figure of a ten foot high standing stone on Pencraig Hill. Click here for a location map provided by StreetMap.

Standing Stone

Like the Loth Stane, the Kirklandhill stone and that at Standingstone Farm, the Pencraig Stane is vaguely reminiscent in size, shape and style of the Callanish stones, and again, appears to be a solitary stone rather than part of a now lost circle.

As can be seen from the above shots, on the North and South sides of the stone respectively, this stone lies in a direct line between the Traprain Law fort and another significant hillfort to the North found on North Berwick Law.
