Welcome to the official online edition of John Garth Wilkinson's West Lothian Place Names published here in association between Torphin House and CyberScotia.
West Lothian Place Names was first published in 1992 and despite a small print-run, fast became an established classic of West Lothian local studies. Although it has been unavailable in hardcopy for some time, demand for the text has increased rather than diminished, and so after a very short brainstorm between John (author) and Steve (webmaster) in spring 2005, the idea of converting it into a website was born.
The project aims not only to provide a free-to-access revised edition of the text itself, but to enhance its usability through a searchable database. In addition, online publication allows for continuous updates and additions to the place name entries as our research progresses. We also welcome suggestions for inclusions, addenda and revisions.
The website is currently under development, and the aim is to have everything working soon. We thank you for your patience as we develop the site.
